Hotels in Girona reach 96% occupancy in August, with moderate growth in the campsite, apartment and rural tourism sectors

Girona, august 2016

Hotels on Girona’s coast met expectations in July with about 91% occupancy, while occupancy increased in August to between 94% and 96%, a 5% growth over the previous year thanks to the upturn in both the domestic and foreign market.

After seven years of losing customers, Girona’s campsites increased their reservations by 3% in 2015 and, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), growth has continued this year with 177,015 tourists and a 9.32% increase in June, with occupancy forecasts up to 70% during the summer.

The occupancy rate of Girona’s tourist apartments ranged from 75% to 80% in July, increasing to 90% to 95% in August. The most popular tourist apartments are those located along the Costa Brava and in the mountains, attracting mostly Catalan, French, Dutch, German and English families.

Moreover, rural tourism has made a comeback with occupancy close to 80% in inland areas and 95% in coastal areas. This type of tourism is hugely significant for the economy in the Pyrenees, which recorded 17% more overnight stays in 2015 and a 16% increase in bookings on the Costa Brava.

As for the profile of local tourists, they tend to be middle-aged couples and families from Barcelona and surrounding metropolitan areas, while the average foreign tourists are families and 60-year-old couples from France, the UK, Germany, Benelux and Russia.
