For the first time ever, the destination received over 5 million foreign tourists.

In 2016 the number of visitors to the province of Girona rose slightly to reach over 5 million tourists (roughly 4.6% more than in 2015), and almost 20 million overnight stays. According to figures provided by the Observatory of Tourism in Catalonia, between January and November 2016 5,094,073 foreign tourists came to the Costa Brava and the Girona Pyrenees, generating 19,380,385 overnight stays.

In the province of Girona, the Spanish, French, British, German and Benelux markets were the main customers. A slight drop was noted in the French market, with a levelling-off of the Russian market and an increase in the number of US visitors.

At present, the tourist GDP for the province of Girona is 13% (in the town of Lloret de Mar it may reach over 25%).

Catalonia continues to be the prime destination in Spain in terms of the number of foreign tourist visits, topping the figure of 17 million tourists in 2016.
